Mount Eliza – Wimborne Avenue – Main Bathroom & Powder Room

The gorgeous Main Bathroom and Powder Room - Wimborne Ave, Mt Eliza Project

Creating continuity throughout the home…

What was the brief:

  • Continue the raw, natural colour palette to have continuity throughout the home, and at the same time add vibrancy through beautiful design features

Location: Wimborne Avenue, Mount Eliza

Who lives here: A couple who were looking for modern upgrades to their forever home

Duration: 5 weeks

Budget: Part of a larger $150K Project – Main Bathroom Approx $30K, Powder Room Approx $5K

Room Renovated: Main Bathroom and Powder Room

What was your starting point for the new design?

  • For continuity we stayed with the same colour palette as the ensuite. We included a large freestanding bath, shower and shaving cabinet, light grey basin
  • In the powder room our starting point here was to ensure the powder room had a seamless style matching the main and ensuite bathrooms

What was the space like before?

  • The main bathroom was nice, but aesthetically not in flow with the rest of the house
  • The shower was leaking and underneath it had major underlying issues we would uncover through the renovation
  • The powder room was functionally great, but it needed a lift to bring it back to life

What exactly did you do in the Bathroom and Powder Room?

  • We removed the old bath, vanity, and the shower. Upon removing the shower we realised that the shower had been leaking and found out the extent of the damage.
  • Fixed the sub flooring damaged by the leaking shower
  • Re-stumped parts of the house when the existing stumps had sunk
  • Altered and re-run the plumbing to avoid disasters in the future!
  • Replaced the moulded shower base with a stepless design, and custom fabricated grate
  • Replaced all fixtures, fittings and tiles to match the ensuite
  • Created a lighting to plan to capture the natural light, and also create ambience at night, and brighter around the shaving cabinet in the ensuite, and perfect lighting especially at the mirror in the powder room
  • Remodel the powder room to match the main and ensuite bathrooms

What challenges did you work around?

  • In the main bathroom we found timber damage – leaking shower
  • We repaired and levelled the damaged subframe by replacing and laminating joists
  • We replaced all drainage plumbing – we found all drainage pipes just poked into an old earthenware pipe, they weren’t even concreted in. If this pipe had blocked up, sewerage would have spilled out and flooded under the house. This could have been very bad, and most of all the clients had no idea about the problem because it was hidden under the bathroom floor
  • This is why you should always completely rip out bathrooms when renovating so you can find and fix underlying problems like this
  • There were no challenges in the powder room – it was straight forward as planned

What are the highlights in these spaces that make it so special?

  • We love everything about this main bathroom – the freestanding bath under that beautiful window framed by the blue tiled feature wall is incredible.
  • The timber vanity, brushed nickel tapware surrounded by white clay chalk structured tiles give a true feeling of luxury
  • In the Powder Room, the floor to ceiling white mod fingers feature wall is definitely a standout. The white tiles, custom timber vanity, above counter bowl, and brushed nickel tapware off the wall makes this space sophisticated, light and bright
  • The beautiful round mirror makes a statement to finish off a perfect powder room for guests in the home
